The Thoracic Spine

Saturday, June 15, 2024, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm PST

Livestreaming on Zoom

One hundred and thirty-six joints are involved in the control and movement of the thoracic spine and rib cage, making it one of the most complex regions in the body. And yet, there is very little conscious attention devoted to the thorax, and its mechanics are frequently the cause of hip, pelvic floor and neck issues.

Movement professionals will delve into the intra-thoracic and global thoracic mechanics and will learn to distinguish between optimal and non-optimal movement strategies. This workshop will focus on how to evaluate each region of the rib cage, the individual rib rings and on figuring out WHY shifts and twists occur. We will focus on key Pilates exercises to restore great alignment and dynamic control of the thorax and ribs.

What you'll take away from this lecture:

  • Conceptualize and understand the thorax as a three-dimensional canister with its internal and external structures working as equals and opposites.
  • Visualize and understand the three separate regions of the thorax, 10 individual rib rings, 2 sets of floating ribs.
  • Practice ways to evaluate the thorax by using critical reasoning and intelligent assessments to understand why the thorax is translating or getting compressed in a certain way.
  • Evolve static ho-hum, exercises into integrative movements that actually resolve thoracic issue, and other associated issues such as persistent hip tightness, back tightness, pelvic floor gripping, incontinence, and recurrent neck issues.
  • Hone a well-developed knowledge of how to restore issues in the thorax, and go beyond simplistic, short-term fixes when ribs are seen as popping or pinching.
  • Use small props to modify exercises for a client with a thoracic kyphosis, shift & twist, forward translation, and stiffness.
