Critical Reasoning Basics for Movement Professionals

Critical reasoning, when applied by movement professionals, is the skill set required to intelligently discern where to start with each client, and how to progress or regress exercise based on how they respond. Critical reasoning depends upon informed pattern recognition, and on knowing how to interpret the cues your client’s body is offering.

Instead of simply following a set exercise program, you'll learn WHY and WHEN to select initial restorative exercises, and HOW to pivot when a client is not progressing. In this video-on-demand package, Melanie Byford-Young explores four topics to help you engage deeper with the critical reasoning behind isolation or integration exercises, myofascial tension, the four "R's" of restoring dynamic control, and the mobility spectrum influencing your clients' needs.

What you'll get:

  •  Exercise Selection: Isolate, Integrate, Regional Interdependence (15:13) ~ What factors help you choose a restorative exercise with a complex client?  Regional interdependence defines how we move, and explains why the site of pain is frequently not the source of the problem. Intelligent selection of an isolation vs. an integration exercises helps restore optimal balance throughout the body.
  •  Myofascial Tension: Differentiating Short, Tight, Taut, & Spasm (12:10) ~ Clients feel ‘tight’ for four main reasons, and each cause must be approached differently. This video shows how might a movement professional can differentiate between short, taut, tight, and a protective spasm.
  •  Release, Reset, Realign & Restore (12:30) ~ How do you pivot when progress slows or current programming is not working?  Look for pattern recognition, understand the clues to what the body is telling you, and how to use the four "R's" as a guide.
  •  The Mobility Spectrum (9:08) ~ Defining the variants of mobility in the body and how to approach each type.
